Rapant Michal

The canvases by Michal Rapant, a graduate from Vasil Artamonov’s studio at the Faculty of Fine Arts in Brno, are manifestations of wildly expressionist, gestic painting in striking colours applied in layers. The student of the first year at the Academy of Fine Arts in Vladimír Skrepl’s studio draws subjects from the works of the old masters, among them for example Guernica by Picasso, Goya’s Saturn Devouring his own Son or Velasquez’s portrait of Pope Innocent X, and uses them for his own experiments. Apart from these, the protagonists of his paintings are mythological creatures (Minotaur, Harpies or Europe), Biblical characters such as those from the apocryphal love story of Judith and Holofernes as well as animals which paraphrase other famous paintings (Opičáci Arnolfini / Arnolfini Monkeys) or playful portraits (Kocour / Tom Cat, Bílé myšky / White Mice).
